Australia: ‘Unfair’ visa laws ‘can’t be changed’, immigration minister says

Posted October 12, 2018 12:19:53The Federal Government’s immigration minister has defended a change in the law that would allow non-citizens to apply for a visa in Australia.

But Senator Sam Dastyari says the move is unfair and has caused confusion.

“I think it’s a very unfair change, and it’s one that’s not in the best interest of the country,” he said.

Senator Dastyaris says non-citizen visa holders will be able to apply without any additional paperwork.

He says they can stay in Australia indefinitely, but they will need to complete a mandatory visa interview to be able get the visa.

The visa application is also now online and people can register to receive notifications when the visa is issued.
